May 1st every year is a holiday shared by working people around the world – International Labor Day, also known as “May 1st International Labor Day”.
The festival originated in Chicago, USA in the late 19th century. On May 1, 1886, over 200000 workers in Chicago went on a large-scale strike and march to advocate for the implementation of an eight hour workday. After a difficult struggle, they finally achieved victory. This workers’ movement shook the world. In July 1889, the Second International organized by Engels announced in Paris that May 1st of each year would be designated as International Labor Day to commemorate this great workers’ movement.
The celebration of Labor Day by the Chinese people can be traced back to 1918. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People’s Government officially designated May 1st as the statutory Labor Day in December 1949.
May Day is a tribute to the hard work of workers and a tribute to the spirit of struggle. Labor creates happiness, and hard work achieves great achievements. Every worker who silently works in their position deserves respect and praise.
